“A custom rug is the rare luxury where you control everything — size, colour, design and quality — and still pay less than the showroom price.”
Ordering custom rugs from India is far simpler than most buyers expect. Working directly with a Jaipur workshop means you skip the middlemen, choose every detail yourself, and receive a hand-knotted rug made precisely to your room, your palette and your taste — often for less than a ready-made rug of the same quality.
India is one of the world’s largest sources of hand knotted rugs, and the standards behind that industry are well documented — GoodWeave certifies child-labour-free production across the region, worth checking whoever you order from.
The reason buyers worldwide order from Jaipur is simple: it is one of the last places where fine hand-knotting is still a living craft, passed down through generations of weavers. A custom order lets you tap that craftsmanship for a piece that fits your home exactly — no compromises on size, colour or design.
This guide walks you through the entire process in seven clear steps, then covers what you can customise, what it costs, how long it takes, and the expert tips that make the difference between a good rug and a perfect one.
Section 01
Before the how, the why. Ordering custom rugs from India directly from the workshop gives you four advantages a retail showroom simply cannot match.
Factory-Direct Pricing
Buying straight from the workshop removes retail mark-ups, so you pay for the craft, not the showroom.
True Bespoke Fit
Any size, shape, colour and design — the rug is made for your room, not adapted to it.
Genuine Hand-Knotting
Each rug is tied by hand by master weavers in Jaipur, for heirloom detail and longevity.
Direct Communication
You approve the design and a sample before production, so there are no surprises.
The Process
Here is the full journey from first idea to finished rug. Most of it happens over email or chat with our team, so you can order custom rugs from India from anywhere in the world.
Start with what moves you — a Pinterest board, a photo of an antique Persian piece, a fabric swatch, or simply a style direction such as ‘modern abstract’ or ‘traditional medallion’. Share it with the workshop and our designers translate it into a rug design, or adapt one of our existing pieces.
Decide on the fibre: durable, soft wool for everyday rooms; lustrous silk for fine detail and sheen; or a wool-and-silk blend for the best of both. If you are unsure, our wool versus silk guide can help, or our team will recommend the right fibre for your room and budget.
Measure your space carefully and decide on exact dimensions — this is the single biggest benefit of going custom. Rectangles, runners, squares, rounds and even irregular shapes are all possible, made to the centimetre.
Choose your colours to match your furniture, walls and light. You can supply hex codes, fabric samples or paint chips; the workshop dyes the wool to suit and can send physical yarn samples so you approve the exact shades before weaving begins.
Send your design, material, size and colours, and you will receive a detailed quote and lead time. Once you confirm the specification and place your order, the design is finalised and queued for the loom.
For larger or more detailed commissions, the workshop weaves a small sample — a strike-off — so you can check the colours and quality in person before full production. Nothing goes to the loom at scale until you are happy.
Your rug is hand-knotted, washed and finished — a process that takes weeks to a few months depending on size and knot density. It is then quality-checked, rolled, and shipped to your door worldwide with a certificate of authenticity.

Section 02
Because every custom rug is unique, there is no single price — but the factors that drive cost are easy to understand. The biggest are size, knot density (KPSI), material, and design complexity. A larger, finer, silk rug with an intricate design takes more time and skill, and is priced accordingly.
Even so, ordering custom rugs from India directly from the workshop is typically far better value than buying an equivalent rug at retail, because there are no showroom mark-ups. You pay for materials and craftsmanship, not for a storefront.
On timing, expect anywhere from a few weeks for a smaller, standard-density wool rug to a few months for a large, finely knotted silk commission. Your quote will always include a realistic lead time, and we keep you updated as your rug moves through the loom, wash and finishing stages.
Get It Right
Measure twice — Note your exact room dimensions and how the furniture sits, so the rug anchors the space properly.
Always approve a colour sample — Screens distort colour; ask for physical yarn samples before production begins.
Share real reference images — Photos of your room, furniture and inspiration help the designer match your vision precisely.
Ask about pile and use — Tell the workshop the room and traffic level so they recommend the right material and pile height.
Request a certificate of authenticity — A genuine hand-knotted rug should come with documentation of its origin and materials.
